In every undergraduate creative writing workshop I was part of, there was that one kid who said, “I like to write, but I don’t really like to read,” and it was evident right away that you could pretty much write that kid off completely. “The ugly fact is books are made out of books.”

  8. poetrymidwest said: I’ve taught hundreds of students during my career as a college writing instructor, both in composition and creative writing. I have yet to find a strong writer who doesn’t read. On the other hand, ALL of the weak writers didn’t read for pleasure.
  9. saintfranklin said: I study creative writing, and I have a few people in my group who says that - “I write, but I hate reading.” They also happen to be the worst writers. Like Stephen King said: If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time, or the tools, to write.
