David Ogilvy, Confessions of an Advertising Man

Sometimes, reading certain books in public attracts unwanted attention. (Hello, Kindle.)

I wish I had this boss 1st trade paperback printing with Ogilvy smoking on the cover instead of the Mad Men reprint cover I was reading, which got me into this exchange at the Woodland bar last night:

Male Hippie Artist Wannabe: What are you reading?AK: (shows him the book)MHAWS: Are you in advertising?AK: Yes.MHAW: Do you work at that place? You know, the one on sixth street?AK: GSD&M?MHAW: Yeah. You work there?AK: No.MHAW: You want to though, right? (snickers)AK: Not really.MHAW: Do you know those guys, those brothers who work over 7th?AK: The Butler Brothers?MHAW: Yeah, the Butler Brothers. You know them?AK: Yes, I’m friends with Adam and Marty.MHAW: They’re pretty good, huh?AK: Yes, they are.

This guy continues to blather on to his poor female companion about the brilliant art installation he wants to build. “On one side, we’re gonna have swings. On the other side, birds…”

Yes, dear reader, he was describing a playground.

Anyways, some bits from the book I tweeted while reading:

“conceal your arrogance and keep up your studies”“American businessmen are not taught that it is a sin to bore your fellow creatures.”“If I had behaved in a more professional way, it would’ve taken me 20 years to arrive.”Good read. But beware your surroundings.
