Kurt Vile, “Runner Ups,” off Smoke Ring For My Halo (2011)
“My best friend’s long gone / but I’ve got / runner ups / yeeeah”
Okay, so Smoke Ring was one of those records that wasn’t clicking, but it was because I just wasn’t listening to in the right context—I was trying to listen to it on the bus on ear buds, and that was a bad idea because:
- this album will make you fall asleep and/or slit your wrists if you listen to it on the bus
- you can’t hear all the beautiful sonic things going on in the recording without a good set of cans or a quiet room
(For bus listening, I recommend something loud and brash—maybe punk rock or this year’s favorite, Rick James’ Street Songs.)
But this record is really great. Listen at home with some whiskey, or while working—someplace warm and quiet.
I really like Kurt Vile. Here’s him performing “Baby’s Arms” on his Take Away Show:
